Chris Spears Massage
May 4th
Whether you’re an elite athlete, weekend warrior, casual gym-goer or anywhere in between, regular massage will rejuvenate your body and your mind. Get to know massage therapist Chris Spears and her specialty massage practice in Austin.
What is Chris Spears Massage?
Chris Spears Massage was founded to help people meet their fitness goals and enhance their athletic performance by relieving muscular tension and pain, while increasing range of motion and recovery time. I focus on specific muscle groups to address each clients’ individual needs.
Using a variety of techniques, my goal is to increase blood flow to the muscles which will reduce chronic pain, increase restricted range of motion and break down scar tissue in the muscles. This prevents injury, allows the body to recover more quickly, and enhances performance.
Why did you start Chris Spears Massage?
In my previous life, I was in IT Sales for 5 years. When the thought of sitting indoors, staring at a computer screen all day became more than I could take, I looked towards a career that would be more fulfilling. I needed to feel like I was making a difference in peoples’ lives and helping them to achieve their goals. When I went to massage school to obtain my license, it was always a goal of mine to own my own business. I first began working at a well-known deep tissue clinic to gain hands-on experience, then when the time was right, I founded Chris Spears Massage and never looked back!
How long have you been in business?
My one year anniversary for opening Chris Spears Massage is coming in September. This first year has flown by! I’m looking forward to many more years serving the Austin athletic community.
Where are you located? What’s your schedule?
Chris Spears Massage is conveniently located in Central Austin, near UT Campus and Hyde Park, just off 32nd Street. I work Monday through Friday all day and into the evening on certain days. Usually I take on clients 1-2 Saturdays a month, as long as I’m not working an athletic event around town.
What is you massage style/philosophy?
My work is a combination of various styles of massage; Myofascial Release, Deep Tissue massage, and Trigger Point Release. No two bodies are the same, so no two people will ever receive the same massage; every session is unique. I understand everyones’ needs are different as well, so I customize each one of my sessions to how my client is feeling at that moment, what type of training they’ve been doing, if they are preparing for an event and their specific physical goals.
Who is Chris Spears Massage for? (what’s a typical client profile?)
I work on a wide range of individuals and different body types. My experience has been with both elite and amateur athletes competing in various activities such as cycling, running, Olympic lifting, Triathletes, Yogis, Weekend Warriors and Desk Jockeys. My clients also range greatly in their age, ability and lifestyle. Massage is one of those wonderful practices that truly benefits everyone.
What are the benefits to getting a massage?
Massage has been proven to aid in injury prevention and recovery, which is important regardless of occupation and athletic ability. Typically within 2-3 sessions, clients can experience greater range of motion, increased flexibility, reduced inflammation, enhanced performance and pain relief.
Besides the physical benefits listed above, massage is also a great stress reliever, leading to greater relaxation and better, more sound sleep….things we could all use more of!
What should a new client expect at their first session?
First, I want to learn about their physical activity level, what type of sports/hobbies they are involved with and if they’ve had any injuries in the past. It’s also important for me to learn about the goals they have set; whether it’s training for a specific event or maintaining a strong, healthy body in general. Postural analysis and functional movement exercises also aid my efforts to learn more about my clients.
Typically post-session, I like to demonstrate stretches and/or strength exercises, focusing on a particular ‘problematic’ muscle group. I offer my recommendation of a treatment plan and check in with my clients to make sure their expectations were met after each appointment.
Client Testimonials
Chris Spears is one of the best massage therapists I’ve seen in Austin. She listens to my needs, and focuses her massage on areas I’ve mentioned are troubling me. She has strong hands and gives an extremely firm and deep massage when needed. Her massages are effective at loosening up tight muscles and tendons. Chris is friendly and you can tell she enjoys her job – she puts real effort into her massage and isn’t just going through the motions. I see measurable improvements in my running performance after a session with Chris. I recommend her to anyone who wants to stay injury free while training hard.
~ Chris Kimbrough, ROGUE Elite runner and 2008 Olympic Trials Marathon Qualifier, Austin, TX
:::
Chris is a wonderful massage therapist. What I like about her is that she is an athlete herself and understands what active people need in terms of massage therapy. I’ve been a client for over a year and hope to be as long as I need massage. When my muscles are all knotted up, Chris can apply really deep pressure that helps the healing process. Her knowledge of anatomy physiology is also great. When I tell her where I am in pain and how I caused it, she always knows just what to do to fix it.
I first went to her for a shoulder injury that doctors had even failed to identify what was wrong. She was the first person able to make it feel better , but what I really liked is that she was so determined to help. Getting massage from someone who loves what they do makes all the difference.
~ Dude S., Austin, TX
About the the owner, Chris Spears
After graduating from UTSA, I went straight into IT Sales, moving up the corporate ladder for 5 years. I finally reached a point when my job wasn’t fulfilling me emotionally and I knew it was time to explore other options. With the support of a very patient husband, I began my career transition to massage three years ago and have never regretted my decision. I love that I get to interact with my clients face to face and am presented with new challenges on a daily basis.
Being an athlete myself, I can relate to my clients’ athletic needs and understand how pain limits one’s ability to perform. I have a diverse athletic background, playing both volleyball and softball while in school, and later transitioning to running half marathons, participating in various bootcamps around Austin and developing a regular Vinyasa yoga practice. After spending 5 years in a cubicle stuck behind a desk, I can’t get enough exercise outdoors!
Favorite types of fitness activities/workouts
When I’m not working to make my clients feel good and strong, you can find me running the Greenbelt with my dog/pace setter, on the yoga mat or lifting weights at Dane’s Body Shop. I love that my career requires me to stay strong and healthy and I hope to inspire my clients to do the same.
Favorite places to eat in Austin
There are a couple criteria that have to be met when it comes to picking a place to eat: they must be local and serve locally sourced, natural ingredients. Olivia’s, Snack Bar, East Side Cafe, Blue Dahlia Bistro are just a few favorites….I could go on and on when it comes to food. I love to eat!!
One fitness accessory or clothing you can’t live without
Lululemon anything. Ever since I was introduced to their leggings and running shorts, I haven’t worn anything since. I’m fortunate that in my line of work, it’s perfectly acceptable to wear workout clothes to work!

Jazzercise at the Austin Recreation Center
Apr 24th
Do you like to dance? Looking for a way to burn calories, gain strength, and have fun? If so, Jazzercise could be your fitness match! We connected with Kate Henrichson, owner and instructor of Jazzercise at the Austin Recreation Center, to get the low-down on this popular, dance-inspired workout! (Want to give it a try? Check out the Free Trial offer at the bottom of this article).
What is Jazzercise?
Every Jazzercise group fitness class combines dance-based cardio with strength training and stretching to sculpt, tone and lengthen muscles for maximum fat burn. Choreographed to today’s hottest music, Jazzercise is a fusion of jazz dance, resistance training, Pilates, yoga, and kickboxing. Benefits include increased cardiovascular endurance, strength, and flexibility, as well as an overall “feel good” factor. There are many class formats as well as home workout DVDs. At ARC we offer Traditional (1 hour group) and Personal Touch (small group strength training) classes. The international franchise business hosts a network of 7,800 instructors teaching more than 32,000 classes weekly in 32 countries.
What is the Jazzercise Mission?
We develop and market fun and effective fitness programs and products that enhance the well-being of people of all ages. We believe fitness is an important aspect of well-being and enhances the overall quality of people’s lives; therefore, Jazzercise is committed to helping people understand and value the importance of health and fitness.
How long have you been in business?
Jazzercise was founded in 1969 by Judi Sheppard Missett, who still provides franchisees with all of their choreography today.
Where are you located? What’s your schedule?
We offer classes every day at Austin Recreation Center, located at 1301 Shoal Creek Blvd (next to House Park, behind the Tavern and Bettysport). ARC location and schedule information are found here: http://jcls.jazzercise.com/facility/jazzercise-austin-recreation-center Jazzercise classes are offered all over town.
Exercise is essential for everyone. It keeps us healthy physically, mentally, and emotionally. We are more inclined to stick with a program that we truly enjoy and for me that means that it’s fun and it gets results. Jazzercise offers something for everyone. My class ranges from age 12-70, from all walks of life, at all fitness levels. I like to think that I’m friendly but firm in my approach. I encourage everyone to push themselves to get the most from each class and to complement their efforts in class with a healthy lifestyle outside of class. And we like to have a few laughs while doing it!
Who is Jazzercise Austin Recreation Center for? (what’s a typical client profile?)
Female, age 20-65, any fitness level, friendly
What are the benefits of working out at Jazzercise Austin Recreation Center?
Great workout, friendly customers, wooden gym floor, showers, lockers for day use. We have 7:45 a.m., 12:15 p.m. (lunch), and 5:30 p.m. classes during the week which are really convenient for the customers who work downtown.
What should a new client expect at their first session?
Arrive about 10 minutes early to fill out a registration form and get a parking pass. Wear supportive tennis shoes (I recommend a Studio or Cross Trainer model), comfortable clothing, and bring a water bottle. We have weights and mats although a lot of people bring their own. I recommend 5-8 pound hand weights for class and after about a month of coming to class, 5-15 pound leg weights.
Jazzercise Client Testimonial
I’m the happiest I’ve been in years. I’ve gone from a 22 pant size to a size 8. I started out weighing in at 217 pounds now I weigh 150 pounds. I do have to say when I’m jazzercising, I’m having the time of my life and I’m continuing to stay healthy at the same time. -Melissa, age 29
Kate Henrichson, 33, certified instructor, started attending Jazzercise classes as a kid with her mother and grandmother, and never stopped. She has been an instructor for 8 years. Kate taught classes all through her pregnancy and credits Jazzercise for an easy labor, delivery, and recovery. She loves that Jazzercise is such a smart, efficient, and fun workout for all fitness levels. Kate teaches most of the classes at ARC and has help from a couple of fabulous associate instructors. Kate has lived in Austin since the early 90’s. She spends her free time with her husband Kevin and daughter Harper.
A bit more about Kate….
Kate’s Favorite types of fitness activities/workouts
I’ve always done Jazzercise. Over the years I’ve also experimented with running, weight training at the gym, swimming, yoga, and pushing the BOB stroller around in the hills! I love most types of exercise. Jazzercise continues to add more strength training with weights and resistance tubes which I love.
Kate’s Favorite places to eat in Austin
It’s a toss-up between FoodHeads and Corazon. My daughter and I both have a gluten sensitivity so we follow a gluten free diet. I like healthy restaurants that make dining out enjoyable and easy for us.
One fitness accessory, gear or clothing she can’t live without: Ryka shoes.

Take a Class in the Grass
Apr 3rd
Outdoor workouts to get your booty in shape / By Chrissie Jarrell & Natalie Yerkovich
Spring is in the air and to celebrate the “green issue” of Austin Woman, we decided to step outside the gym and into the grass for great workouts that allow you to enjoy the amazing weather, beautiful scenery and change of pace from your typical routine. Here are a few activities we’re excited about this spring:
OUTDOOR BOOT CAMPS
One of the most popular ways to get fit outdoors is through strength-training boot camps. Boot camps are typically a mix of strength training and cardio, giving you an efficient and well-rounded workout. They tend to be high-intensity, but can be easily scaled to any level. Workouts are about an hour long, led by an instructor and you’ll be sweating it out with a group of five to 20 other boot campers. You can find outdoor boot camps taking place throughout town at almost every time of day, making it a convenient way to get out and enjoy the outdoors.
You’ll love outdoor boot camps if…
- You like the idea of enjoying the sunshine and amazing Austin springtime weather while getting fit.
- You love exercising outdoors, but want instruction and structure to get the most out of your workout.
- You want schedule and location options. There are literally hundreds of class times offered during the week at parks throughout town.
Outdoor boot camps may not be for you if…
- You don’t like to get dirty during your workouts. Most classes are in parks, meaning you’ll be getting sweaty and rolling around in the grass.
- You don’t like the fact that Austin weather in the springtime can be unpredictable. You never know if class will be in the cold or rain. Likewise, if you’re the type to skip class because of less than ideal weather, the consistency of indoor workouts may be best for you.
Here are a few to try:
Austin Adventure Boot Camp
Camp Gladiator
COREFit
Heat Boot Camp
Relentless Training Systems Boot Camp
OUTDOOR YOGA
Swap the studio for the park from April through November with Yoga in the Park, presented by Yoga Yoga (yogayoga.com) in partnership with the Austin Parks Foundation (austinparks.org) and Save Our Springs Alliance (sosalliance.org). Yoga classes are free, led by certified Yoga Yoga instructors and appropriate for all levels. Wear comfortable clothes and bring your own mat and water.
You’ll love outdoor yoga if…
- You enjoy hearing birds chirping and wind blowing through the trees during your yoga practice.
- You like to challenge yourself to focus despite new noises (like traffic, kids playing, dogs barking) and outdoor elements (like an uneven mat surface).
Outdoor yoga may not be for you if…
- You don’t want to get your yoga mat dirty.
- You need a consistent environment to focus. The outdoors can be unpredictable: Leaves can fall on you, there could be twigs under your mat and there isn’t any air conditioning.
Yoga in the Park Schedule (Check yogayoga.com for updates)
APRIL: Wednesdays from noon to 1 p.m. at the park at City Hall Plaza
MAY: Wednesdays from noon to 1 p.m. at Republic Square Park
JUNE: Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Barton Springs
SEPTEMBER: Wednesdays from noon to 1 p.m. at Republic Square Park

TRAIL RUNNING
Mix up your usual road-running routes and treadmill jogs with trails and challenging terrain. Trail running gives runners a nice change of scenery and a softer surface to lighten your impact load. Plus, there are so many beautiful trails throughout Central Texas that are perfect for running.
You’ll love trail running if…
You are looking for a more challenging run. Trail running requires you to pay close attention to your footing and make side-to-side movements in addition to forward motion.
You like the idea of ditching the pavement for a more forgiving surface. Natural trail surfaces are softer than pavement, putting less impact on your joints.
Trail running may not be for you if…
- You like the smooth, uniform surfaces so you can zone out during your run.
- You need to run at specific paces. Trail running often forces you to slow down a little to be able to safely navigate terrain. It is less reliable when it comes to pacing than a flat, smooth running surface.
- You like for your running shoes to stay clean.
Trail running groups to try:
Women on the Trails Program by Trailhead Running
Rogue Running
Hill Country Trail Runners
However you chose to be fit this spring, we hope you enjoy the parks and outdoor spaces you already know about and discover a few more to love.

Pilates 101
Feb 24th
Pilates is so hot right now! Seriously, it is one of the fastest growing forms of exercise in the U.S. So what is it all about and should you book your first class or private lesson today?
We sat down with expert Pilates instructor Denise Hurd of Pilates 360 to learn more about this popular exercise routine.
What is Pilates?
Pilates was first developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates as an exercise routine to strengthen the body and mind. The Pilates method has six principles at its core:
- Centering
- Concentration
- Control
- Precision
- Breath
- Flow
Although these six principles are at the foundation of Pilates, how they are incorporated into a routine can vary greatly. Denise believes that Pilates is the perfect exercise for practically everyone because of the adaptability of the movements. She notes, “we shoot for the goal of the exercise and make modifications where necessary, depending on the level and ability of each individual.”
Benefits of Pilates
Being so adaptable, Pilates can have a number of different benefits – depending on your personal fitness and health goals. Some of the key target areas include:
- Increased flexibility
- Muscular strength and endurance
- Core strength
- Improved balance and coordination
- Spinal and pelvic alignment
- Injury prevention
- Breath control
We asked Denise to tell us specifically how Pilates could benefit endurance athletes (runners, triathletes, cyclists). She notes, “Pilates is a great cross-training exercise to stretch, lengthen and strengthen muscles as well as for targeting any imbalances that could lead to injury. And because it is a full-body focused exercise that emphasizes quality over quantity, no muscle group is under or over-trained.” Sounds to us like something everyone needs to incorporate into their weekly routine!
What to Expect
Starting something new is often nerve-racking. We asked Denise to give us a quick run-down of what first-timers can expect.
Mat or Equipment: Pilates is either done on a mat on the floor or with specifically designed equipment. Many of the local Austin Pilates studios offer both options and you may want to try both before you decide on your favorite approach!
Learn First: Because Pilates requires an understanding of the foundation principles and many of the movements will be new to first-time students, you will probably want to start with a beginner-class or private instruction.
How Often: Best results are often seen with 2-3 classes per week. But, depending on your goals, Pilates once-a-week could be just what you need!
Find Your Pilates Fit: Just as with all fitness programs, not all Pilates instructors or studios are created equal. Here are 5 things to consider when finding your Pilates fit:
(1) Instructor certifications
(2) Location
(3) Types of classes offered: Privates, Duets, Small Group
(4) Mat or Equipment/Reformer
(5) Payment options: per class fee or monthly membership

Testimonials
To get an even better sense of what people are saying about Pilates and it’s benefits, we asked Denise to compile a few testimonials from her own Pilates clients. Here’s what they had to say:
Pilates 360 has a friendly atmosphere and all levels of classes from advanced equipment to the fundamental floor workouts are excellent. I’ve tried many different workouts but only pilates has kept me strong, flexible and toned throughout my 50s – I am hooked! Denise Hurd, my advanced instructor, brings humor and challenge to every workout. Thank you Pilates 360! –Rosalind
Suffering after a back surgery I got introduced to Pilates and Denise, which changed my life. Just after a few month I’m out again running and enjoying activity. Denise always had the passion, the patience and the tenacity to get me well in short time. I feel better now and will never give it up. – Dagmar K.
Denise came highly recommended to me from a well-known Pilates instructor in Tennessee, and I’ve been working with her for a month now. I am a runner, but I have a hard time committing to other types of exercise that help balance my workouts. Pilates has given me the strength and balance that I don’t get from running. It has helped build my core strength, and an unexpected benefit has been the great workout it’s given my upper body. I leave my sessions with Denise feeling like I’ve had a serious workout, and I look forward to getting stronger with each visit. -Kelly L
