What is Jazzercise?

Every Jazzercise group fitness class combines dance-based cardio with strength training and stretching to sculpt, tone and lengthen muscles for maximum fat burn. Choreographed to today’s hottest music, Jazzercise is a fusion of jazz dance, resistance training, Pilates, yoga, and kickboxing. Benefits include increased cardiovascular endurance, strength, and flexibility, as well as an overall “feel good” factor. There are many class formats as well as home workout DVDs. At ARC we offer Traditional (1 hour group) and Personal Touch (small group strength training) classes. The international franchise business hosts a network of 7,800 instructors teaching more than 32,000 classes weekly in 32 countries.

What is the Jazzercise Mission?

We develop and market fun and effective fitness programs and products that enhance the well-being of people of all ages. We believe fitness is an important aspect of well-being and enhances the overall quality of people’s lives; therefore, Jazzercise is committed to helping people understand and value the importance of health and fitness.

How long have you been in business?

Jazzercise was founded in 1969 by Judi Sheppard Missett, who still provides franchisees with all of their choreography today.

Where are you located? What’s your schedule?

We offer classes every day at Austin Recreation Center, located at 1301 Shoal Creek Blvd (next to House Park, behind the Tavern and Bettysport). What is your training style/philosophy?

Exercise is essential for everyone. It keeps us healthy physically, mentally, and emotionally. We are more inclined to stick with a program that we truly enjoy and for me that means that it’s fun and it gets results. Jazzercise offers something for everyone. My class ranges from age 12-70, from all walks of life, at all fitness levels. I like to think that I’m friendly but firm in my approach. I encourage everyone to push themselves to get the most from each class and to complement their efforts in class with a healthy lifestyle outside of class. And we like to have a few laughs while doing it!

What are the benefits of working out at Jazzercise Austin Recreation Center?

Great workout, friendly customers, wooden gym floor, showers, lockers for day use. We have 7:45 a.m., 12:15 p.m. (lunch), and 5:30 p.m. classes during the week which are really convenient for the customers who work downtown.

What should a new client expect at their first session?

Arrive about 10 minutes early to fill out a registration form and get a parking pass. Wear supportive tennis shoes (I recommend a Studio or Cross Trainer model), comfortable clothing, and bring a water bottle. We have weights and mats although a lot of people bring their own. I recommend 5-8 pound hand weights for class and after about a month of coming to class, 5-15 pound leg weights.

About the the owner, Kate Henrichson

Kate Henrichson, 33, certified instructor, started attending Jazzercise classes as a kid with her mother and grandmother, and never stopped. She has been an instructor for 8 years. Kate taught classes all through her pregnancy and credits Jazzercise for an easy labor, delivery, and recovery. She loves that Jazzercise is such a smart, efficient, and fun workout for all fitness levels. Kate teaches most of the classes at ARC and has help from a couple of fabulous associate instructors. Kate has lived in Austin since the early 90’s. She spends her free time with her husband Kevin and daughter Harper.

Kate’s Favorite types of fitness activities/workouts
I’ve always done Jazzercise. Over the years I’ve also experimented with running, weight training at the gym, swimming, yoga, and pushing the BOB stroller around in the hills! I love most types of exercise. Jazzercise continues to add more strength training with weights and resistance tubes which I love.

Kate’s Favorite places to eat in Austin
It’s a toss-up between FoodHeads and Corazon. My daughter and I both have a gluten sensitivity so we follow a gluten free diet. I like healthy restaurants that make dining out enjoyable and easy for us.
