Stand Up Paddling in Austin
Jun 28th
Stand up paddle boarding is one of the fastest-growing activities in the world, and Austin is a great place to enjoy this water sport. We’re joined by Andy Lukei, owner of Austin Paddle Sports, to share his experience with paddle boarding and a few tips for all you paddlers out there.

(Photos courtesy of Austin Paddle Sports)
What makes Austin such a great place for stand up paddling?
Austin, much like Southern California has several key ingredients that have attributed to the success of paddle boarding, which include: easy access to nice user friendly bodies of h2o, a very temperate climate, outdoor enthusiast, and extremely fitness orientated population.
Where are a few of your favorite spots to paddle in Austin?
The West end of Town Lake by Red Bud Island, and I love getting out of town to paddle, there are about 8 rivers inside an hour’s drive that are absolutely gorgeous to paddle.
What are some things people should consider when deciding between renting vs buying a stand up paddle board?
Start by renting, make sure you dig the sport and get a feel for the type/size of board you want before pulling the trigger. When buying go to a local shop that can help make sure you pair up with the right board. “Big box” retailers in Texas don’t have the expertise in this sport yet, they can’t answer the basic questions, stick with a local SUP shop that does.
Tell us a great paddling story.
I decided to open Austin Paddle Sports four years ago after paddling Bull Creek on Memorial Day weekend with my wife and some friends. Boaters we so fascinated with what we were doing we were getting summoned from boat to boat so people could try it out. We spent 3 hours boat hopping, charging 1-beer per ride, and after my wife saw local Austinites reception to the sport she encouraged me to open the rental op and shop.

Austin Paddle Sports offers sales, lessons, demos, rentals and tours. Check them out on website and connect with them on Facebook!
Get your feet wet at The Rowing Dock, in partnership with Austin Paddle Sports, to try stand up paddle boarding or take a lesson.

Natalie Yerkovich and Chrissie Jarrell, the gals who created MyFitList, do the grunt work for you. Well, the organizational grunt work, anyway. They work hard to connect people with the fitness groups, information and resources they need so they can grunt, sweat and tone to achieve their personal goals.
Yerkovich, “a previously frustrated fitness seeker,” created MyFitList with Jarrell to resolve her struggle of finding new groups to join. Now she describes herself as having “a knack for helping connect people with their ideal fitness groups.” Jarrell brings her experience as a fitness guru to the business side of things, creating a strong partnership.
MyFitList makes it easy to search for the perfect fitness group for your schedule, neighborhood and activity of choice. Because Austin is proudly one of the fittest cities in the nation, the options can be overwhelming. MyFitList brings the best of yoga, boot camps, triathlon groups and more right to your fingertips. Jarrell and Yerkovich know that “if your fitness routine is too inconvenient or you don’t click with the trainer, you’re less likely to stick with it and see results.”
Run a fitness group? MyFitList can help your business thrive by giving you “an effective way to connect with potential clients who are looking for exactly what you offer.” MyFitList has no intention of getting stuck at a plateau here in Austin; Jarrell and Yerkovich plan to flex their muscles in other cities soon.
Austin Woman is pleased to partner with MyFitList to bring you the latest workouts and fitness information. In addition to their monthly column, Yerkovich and Jarrell will be contributing to Austin Woman with blog postings, and Facebook and Twitter connections.
Check out their blog, for tips, events, workout videos and giveaways. They feature a new fitness business every week to expand your horizons and keep you feeling the burn.

Zilker Relays Austin – September 2
Aug 24th
One of the most exciting running events of the year is coming up on Friday, September 2. The Zilker Relays is an annual race where 4-person teams run 2.5 miles each around the “Great Lawn” at Zilker Park and the Botanical Gardens. You’ll have a great time competing against other teams in your category – like family, training groups, coworkers, etc. Grab your fastest friends and make a Zilker Relays team to show Austin just how fast you are!
A Few Reasons to Love Zilker Relays
- Short and fast: it’s only a 2.5 mile run per person, meaning there is a nice variety of running abilities and types of athletes. Plus you’re finished before you know it!
- Evening race: a nice change of pace from the 7am start time
- After-party! Celebrate your team with food from Taco Deli, drinks for Hops & Grain, and live music from Vallejo
Registration Details
- The registration capacity is maxed at 250 teams, so grab your team and REGISTER TODAY!
- Team prices vary based on team category – but it is about $40 per person.
- Meal and post race party is included in your registration. Friends who are not racing, can purchase a party ticket in advance for $25 ($40 at the “door”)
See you at the Relays!

Bike Sharing May be Coming to Austin
Jul 20th
Austin may be the next city to offer bike sharing through B-Cycle. Last week, Mellow Johnny’s hosted B-Cycle at the downtown bike shop for a presentation about the proposed bike sharing program, a demo of how the program works, and test rides on the specially designed Trek bikes.
For anyone who has recently visited Denver, Chicago, San Antonio, or any of the 11 total participating cities, you may already know how the program works. It’s pretty simple:

- Become a member online
- Find a nearby docking station online or on the B-cycle app and select your bike
- Ride around, run errands, etc
- Return your bike to any B-station that’s convenient for you
The bikes are constantly maintained and there is a front basket that allows you to cart your things around pretty easily. Bikes can be returned to any station, which makes sense for mixed-commuting like driving/train/bus/walking/cycling. Plus, now we can leave our pricey road and tri bikes safely in our garage, while still enjoying the benefits of bumming around town on a bike and having it locked up on the street for hours.
Mellow Johnny’s, along with other businesses in Austin like GSD&M , are spearheading the movement to get bike sharing to Austin. Given our strong cycling and fitness culture in Austin, along with our traffic and parking problems, it seems like a great idea.
To learn more about B-cycle’s bike sharing programs and how it works in other cities, check them out online: www.bcycle.com. You can also learn more about Mellow Johnny’s here: www.mellowjohnnys.com
What do you think? Do you welcome bike sharing in Austin? Have you tried it in another city?
