Fit Business of the Week: Efficient Exercise
May 24th
Our Fit Business this week is Efficient Exercise – personal fitness and small group training in a studio atmosphere and with the motto of: “Get In. Get Out. Get Fit.”!
How long have you been in business
10 years – we just recently celebrated our 10-year anniversary with a big customer appreciation BBQ. Check out the pics on our Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Efficient-Exercise/282401244774)
Where are you located
Three locations:
- Downtown, at 714 congress;
- Westlake area, at 3636 Bee Caves Rd;
- And our newest (and biggest) location, at the intersection of 45th st. and Burnet (1403B West 45th St.)
What is your training style and philosophy
*Efficiency* is (quite literally) the name of our game and, as such, we put our clients on a steady diet of High Intensity and/or High Intensity Interval Training. Our workouts can be categorized as being “brief, brutal and basic”, and we wring the most training “bang for the buck” out of our clients’ training time investment. We’re non-dogmatic in our approach, in that we employ any and all methodologies and equipment — from our own proprietary ARX equipment, to Nautilus and/or old-school black iron, to simple bodyweight exercises — whatever the situation calls for to produce results.
What is the typical profile of your clients
We cover the spectrum – from the uber-busy, health-conscious professional, to the competitive athlete who’s looking for the edge that intelligently and properly programmed resistance training can provide. Anyone who’s looking to maximize return on training time investment!
What are the benefits
Increased strength and power (both instantaneousness and durational) output, enhanced health and well-being, injury prevention and performance betterment. Remember this: in the case of all other things being equal in a particular sporting performance, the stronger, more powerful competitor will prevail.
Here’s a quick client testimonial:
What should clients expect at their first session/workout. How should they prepare?
The first few sessions are characterized by a good bit of “on-ramping” — that is, new clients are assessed according to physical ability and movement patterns, and these results are then compared against the client’s stated goals. From there, an individual training protocol is developed. As exposure and tolerance to our training methods increases, so does the intensity of each workout. No two clients are the same and, therefore, no two training protocols are the same. Our more fit and experienced new clients on-ramp extremely fast (within a couple of sessions). Newbies, though, ought not worry — we progress at a rate that is correct for the individual — that is, we do not force a client into any preconceived rate of progression.
Describe a typical session/workout
Here’s an example of a chest (or “push” movement, for those who speak the language of functional movement patterns) workout that many of my clients performed last week:
(A1) ARX* chest press, 5 reps
(A2) Dumbbell fly to positive failure
(A3) Blast strap (think “TRX”) fly (or feet elevated push-ups) to failure
This was done as a 2-round “superset”, moving at a quick clip between each individual exercise. This is a highly effective routine — and efficient, as well. I can tell you that this portion of the workout was completed in approximately 10 minutes, and that a third round is not only unnecessary, but not doable)
*Note: our CZT equipment is currently being re-branded under the ARX (Accommodating Resistance eXercise) moniker. ARX is also a Roman citadel, or fortress.
There are also a bunch of sample workouts on the Efficient Exercise YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/EfficientExercise

Fit Business of the Week – Pedal Hard
Jan 20th
Join us each week as we feature a Fit Business in Austin offering expert training to help you improve your fitness. The Fit Business this week is Kevin Livingston’s Pedal Hard Training Center.
Located inside Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop downtown, Pedal Hard is a state-of-the-art indoor cycling training center. Athletes of all abilities are guided by expert coaches in cycling technique, training principles and workouts to help them achieve their individual goals.
How does Pedal Hard work?
The Pedal Hard Training Center houses 8 CompuTrainer bike trainers. These trainers allow you to train on your bike on courses of varying terrain and difficulties. The trainers automatically change resistance (or “load”) based on where the rider is on the specific course.
Who is Pedal Hard for?
Pedal Hard is great for all levels of athletes – from those looking to improve fitness or cycling skill, to those training for triathlons, duathlons or road races. Pedal Hard also offers individual threshold testing and Retul bike fittings for those athletes looking to jump to the next level.
What should I expect at a Pedal Hard class?
Because there are only 8 spots available in each class, it is best to reserve a spot by going online to www.pedalhard.com. There are classes throughout the day at 6am, 7am, 8:30am, 12noon, 4pm and 6pm. Be sure to bring your bike, bike shoes and water bottles.
What are the benefits of a Pedal Hard class?
Riding on a CompuTrainer has so many benefits. For the beginner, it will allow you to become more comfortable on your bike and shifting gears without the distraction of the road. For more advanced athletes, the CompuTrainer give you feedback on your power output relative to the terrain, heart rate, and cadence. It gives you a lot of useful information to help you track progress and overall fitness. Plus, the Pedal Hard Center is open rain or shine – so there are no excuses not to ride!
About head coach Kevin Livingston: In a 14-year career including six appearances in the Tour de France, Kevin learned how to train for both results and fun. He is a committed partner and fully supports you as you progress toward your cycling goals.
