Five Ways to Make Fitness Fun for Kids
Aug 8th

Pilates for Kids with Mauro Pilates
By Chrissie Jarrell and Natalie Yerkovich
Austin Woman Magazine August 2012
The habits we learn as children shape our feelings toward fitness and wellness in to our adult lives. As a loved one in a child’s life, we have an amazing opportunity to encourage kids to default to a healthy lifestyle. Your influence through activity is so important and can be a fun way to connect with your children while showing them ways to be healthy and fit. Here are five ways to make fitness fun for your kids (and yourself).
1. MAKE IT SPECIAL
Build a routine based on fitness activities that goes beyond the activity itself. For instance, every Saturday morning, take the family for a run or walk around Lady Bird Lake, cool off at Barton Springs and wind down with a healthy lunch together at Whole Foods. A special and recurring ritual is something to look forward to each weekend.
2. MAKE A GAME OF IT
It’s easy to forget you’re working out when you’re having fun. Ask your child to teach you a game they play at school. Start a game of soccer or volleyball with the entire family. Build an obstacle course and have everyone compete.
3. TAKE A TRIP
Visit a beautiful river and go canoeing, take a bike ride around a new city’s hike-and-bike trails, go hiking to the top of Enchanted Rock. Allow a change of scenery to inspire movement and exploration.
4. TAKE A CLASS
Enrolling your kids in a fitness class gives them a good opportunity to be trained by professionals and meet kids outside of school. Plus, you may be able to do your own workout while the kids are in class. (See below for just a few of the many fitness classes for kids.)
5. MIX IT UP
Kids get bored just like we do. Vary their activities so they are trying different things and learning new ways to move.
CLASSES FOR KIDS
Yoga: Austin Kula Yoga, Yoga Yoga
Pilates: Mauro Pilates
Martial Arts: Castle Hill Fitness (Kajukenbo for Kids)
Triathlon: T3 Multisports
Running: Gilbert’s Gazelles
SHUTTLE FOR KIDS
New service provides safe and convenient trans portation to after-school activities.
When Lake Travis ISD school bus driver Raqcuel Ayala realized that budget cuts meant students were no longer dropped off at extracurricular activities, the idea for a new business was born. Lake Travis Shuttle for Kids started rolling in January 2012 and provides a service shuttling kids door to door between schools, to after-school activities and picking them up in case of sickness or emergency. The driver texts parents when the child arrives at their destination. Currently available only in the Lake Travis ISD area. For more information, visit ltshuttleforkids.com or call 512.263.5437. Raqcuel will be featured on YNN’s Local Wonders segment airing Tuesday, Aug. 21 on channels 8 and 1505 on Time Warner Cable.

Handana Giveaway!
Jun 12th
It’s officially hot out there, Austin! Do you feel like you’re sweating buckets during your outdoor workouts yet?!
We recently learned about a new product that helps you workout through the sweat. It’s called HANDANA and it’s a high performance athletic band designed to be worn on your hand to wipe away blood, sweat, tears (and snot). Handana just slips on like a glove with your thumb in the center hole. Made of supplex Lycra, which is nylon made to feel like cotton, Handana wicks away the moisture and drys quicker than cotton. It’s easily washable – after your workout just throw it in the washing machine on cold with like colors, line dry, and it’s ready to go for your next workout. It comes in a variety of colors and sizes to fit any athlete.
It’s great for running, cycling, yoga, CrossFit, spinning, bootcamp, tennis, hiking, yard work and virtually any other activity that makes you sweat. It was developed in Austin by a local entrepreneur, athlete, mom and wife, so you know it’ perfect for our super-humid and hot conditions.
Tell us HOW YOU PLAN TO SWEAT THIS SUMMER and you could win your very own Handana! Leave a comment here or on Facebook to enter. Contest winners will be announced Thursday, June 14 at 3pm CST.
Handana is also available for sale ONLINE and in-stores at Bettysport and C’est Chic.

Take a Class in the Grass
Apr 3rd
Outdoor workouts to get your booty in shape / By Chrissie Jarrell & Natalie Yerkovich
Spring is in the air and to celebrate the “green issue” of Austin Woman, we decided to step outside the gym and into the grass for great workouts that allow you to enjoy the amazing weather, beautiful scenery and change of pace from your typical routine. Here are a few activities we’re excited about this spring:
OUTDOOR BOOT CAMPS
One of the most popular ways to get fit outdoors is through strength-training boot camps. Boot camps are typically a mix of strength training and cardio, giving you an efficient and well-rounded workout. They tend to be high-intensity, but can be easily scaled to any level. Workouts are about an hour long, led by an instructor and you’ll be sweating it out with a group of five to 20 other boot campers. You can find outdoor boot camps taking place throughout town at almost every time of day, making it a convenient way to get out and enjoy the outdoors.
You’ll love outdoor boot camps if…
- You like the idea of enjoying the sunshine and amazing Austin springtime weather while getting fit.
- You love exercising outdoors, but want instruction and structure to get the most out of your workout.
- You want schedule and location options. There are literally hundreds of class times offered during the week at parks throughout town.
Outdoor boot camps may not be for you if…
- You don’t like to get dirty during your workouts. Most classes are in parks, meaning you’ll be getting sweaty and rolling around in the grass.
- You don’t like the fact that Austin weather in the springtime can be unpredictable. You never know if class will be in the cold or rain. Likewise, if you’re the type to skip class because of less than ideal weather, the consistency of indoor workouts may be best for you.
Here are a few to try:
Austin Adventure Boot Camp
Camp Gladiator
COREFit
Heat Boot Camp
Relentless Training Systems Boot Camp
OUTDOOR YOGA
Swap the studio for the park from April through November with Yoga in the Park, presented by Yoga Yoga (yogayoga.com) in partnership with the Austin Parks Foundation (austinparks.org) and Save Our Springs Alliance (sosalliance.org). Yoga classes are free, led by certified Yoga Yoga instructors and appropriate for all levels. Wear comfortable clothes and bring your own mat and water.
You’ll love outdoor yoga if…
- You enjoy hearing birds chirping and wind blowing through the trees during your yoga practice.
- You like to challenge yourself to focus despite new noises (like traffic, kids playing, dogs barking) and outdoor elements (like an uneven mat surface).
Outdoor yoga may not be for you if…
- You don’t want to get your yoga mat dirty.
- You need a consistent environment to focus. The outdoors can be unpredictable: Leaves can fall on you, there could be twigs under your mat and there isn’t any air conditioning.
Yoga in the Park Schedule (Check yogayoga.com for updates)
APRIL: Wednesdays from noon to 1 p.m. at the park at City Hall Plaza
MAY: Wednesdays from noon to 1 p.m. at Republic Square Park
JUNE: Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Barton Springs
SEPTEMBER: Wednesdays from noon to 1 p.m. at Republic Square Park

TRAIL RUNNING
Mix up your usual road-running routes and treadmill jogs with trails and challenging terrain. Trail running gives runners a nice change of scenery and a softer surface to lighten your impact load. Plus, there are so many beautiful trails throughout Central Texas that are perfect for running.
You’ll love trail running if…
You are looking for a more challenging run. Trail running requires you to pay close attention to your footing and make side-to-side movements in addition to forward motion.
You like the idea of ditching the pavement for a more forgiving surface. Natural trail surfaces are softer than pavement, putting less impact on your joints.
Trail running may not be for you if…
- You like the smooth, uniform surfaces so you can zone out during your run.
- You need to run at specific paces. Trail running often forces you to slow down a little to be able to safely navigate terrain. It is less reliable when it comes to pacing than a flat, smooth running surface.
- You like for your running shoes to stay clean.
Trail running groups to try:
Women on the Trails Program by Trailhead Running
Rogue Running
Hill Country Trail Runners
However you chose to be fit this spring, we hope you enjoy the parks and outdoor spaces you already know about and discover a few more to love.

The Right Style of Yoga for You
Sep 27th
Whether you’re new to yoga or an experienced yogi, there are so many choices when it comes to finding the right studio and style of yoga for you. Check out this useful article from Lifehacker for an overview of the nine styles of hatha yoga and tips for experimenting to find the right one for you.

http://lifehacker.com/5803333/how-to-find-the-right-style-of-yoga-for-you
Here are some of the highlights to get you started:
- Yoga is a form of exercise that encourages and strengthens your mind body connection. Western yoga classes emphasize Hatha – a form of yoga emphasizing the physical foundations like posture and breath.
- Within Hatha Yoga, there are 9 variations that are common in studios across Austin.
- First, Think about why you were inspired to start practicing yoga in the first place – physical intensity, relaxation, flexibility, mind-body connection, recover from an injury, spirituality? Then choose a few styles you would like to try.
- Visit a few different studios and try a beginner class (especially if you’ve practiced yoga less than 10 times in your life or it has been a while since your last class – the teacher will give you more attention and make sure you’re aligned properly).
- The teacher can make all the difference – be sure that you mesh with their style of talking you through poses, level of attention, philosophy, etc.

Is Pilates like Yoga?
Jan 24th
Have you ever wondered what the differences are between Pilates and Yoga? The movements seem to be similar and they often both take place on a mat in a studio, but these two activities are quite different! Guest blogger and Founder of Mauro Pilates Body, Liana Mauro, joins MyFitList to explain the benefits and differences between Pilates and Yoga.
–
I hear it all the time…”Isn’t pilates like yoga?” While it is true that Joseph Pilates did integrate yoga into his creation, he also drew from other forms of movements such as boxing, tai chi, and gymnastics.
Originally, Joseph called his system of movement Contrology because of the strong correlation between engaging the mind to control the muscles. Joseph formulated a system that primarily strengthens the core postural muscles, which in turn provides balance to the body and support for the spine. Primarily, Pilates exercises teach awareness of breath and spinal alignment, and provide increased strength to the deep torso and abdominal muscles.
One of the most important things to me is remaining connected to a state of balance; Pilates does this for me. To the beginner, Pilates can seem to teach contradictions; yet it is these contradictions that provide the sense of balance. For example, Pilates movements focus on both muscular strength and flexibility along with joint mobilization and joint stability. Pilates also places an emphasis on control while simultaneously encouraging the body to move with freedom.
While I am not a yoga instructor, I have practiced yoga extensively over the years and the benefits they offer are quite different.
Both forms of movement place emphasis on connecting movement with breath; pilates teaches breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth, while yoga breath is in and out through the nose. The pilates breath encourages abdominal engagement while yoga breath encourages relaxation.
Both types of exercise have the ability to have a cardiovascular element but the popular yoga “flow” classes offer that in a much greater way because of the continual movement through the class from pose to pose. Pilates does flow from exercise to exercise but incorporates repetitions instead of holding a static pose. The flow often leaves a yoga practitioner feeling very stretched while Pilates sequencing often produces a feeling of strength.
The mindset encouraged in each type of movement also differs. Pilates, originally called Contrology, emphasizes using the mind to control specific muscle groups while yoga emphasizes a peaceful and relaxed mindset throughout the poses.
The final primary difference is that while yoga is mat-based, Pilates often incorporates equipment into the exercise. Mat-based Pilates is very convenient and can be done anywhere. Pilates exercise focuses on using one’s own body weight as the resistance and mat Pilates is a great place to learn this concept.
Adding light equipment and larger resistance equipment places more emphasis on outer limbs and adds variety and intensity to workouts. The most popular piece of Pilates equipment is the reformer. It features a sliding carriage and spring tension used to provide resistance and support. The spring tension provides gradual resistance as muscular contractions occur to ensure the muscles are being engaged properly. The beginning and completion of a movement has less resistance and at the muscle’s strongest point of contraction, there is greater resistance. This is one reason why Pilates places less stress on tendons and ligaments then other forms of strengthening. Another idea behind using springs instead of weights is to encourage the practitioner to engage their muscles both concentrically (shortened) and eccentrically (lengthened). It is because of this that Pilates produces lean muscle mass along with increased flexibility.
A fairly recent exercise trend that incorporates Pilates with dance is another option for those wanting a more intense workout. I call this form of movement Barrework. Barrework focuses on my four favorite areas to tone: abs, arms, thighs, and glutes. Primarily using bodyweight as resistance, high repetitions of small and controlled movements are performed. This type of movement yields very fast results and people report seeing exciting changes within at least 5 sessions.
In sum, my own belief is that if you are seeking strength (especially abdominal), relief from chronic pain, or a desire to create lean muscle mass, pilates is for you.
If you’re seeking a spiritual practice and a significant increase in flexibility, yoga could be it.
Both are similar and many people find great results by incorporating both types of movement into their routines. I believe it’s important to try different types of movement and find something that fits with your goals and personality. Fitness should leave you feeling and looking great…and a little bit of fun doesn’t hurt!

Friday Fitness Find
Jan 7th
It’s almost the weekend! I know you’re all excited to bust out of your office in a few hours to rest, play and maybe sneak in a little fitness over the next couple of days.
We have a few ideas for staying active this weekend, in our weekly feature – the Friday Fitness Find:
- Heated yoga classes at Black Swan: it’s 70° and sunny in Austin right now, but this weekend may be a little cold and rainy! Warm up with a “Sweaty Yoga” class at Black Swan Yoga. Black Swan is a donation-based studio, meaning that you pay what you can per class (the suggested donation is $10-15 per class). The Sweaty Yoga classes are flow-style yoga, in rooms heated to around 90°. It’s nice! There are two Sweaty Yoga classes on Saturday and three on Sunday (among their many other yoga classes every weekend). Check out their full schedule.
- Free bootcamps: if you’re looking to get some time outside this weekend, try a free Bootcamp. These 45-minute to 1-hour workouts are an effective way to get in a mix of strength training and intense cardio. The trainers will tailor exercises for beginners to advanced athletes, and as a bonus many of these groups meet in gorgeous parks around Austin! A few groups offering a free Saturday bootcamp this weekend: ATX Bootcamp Living, Austin Adventure Bootcamp, CoreFit, and Relentless Bootcamp.
